Who is in the Melbourne Renegades squad for BBL 2026-27?

The Melbourne Renegades currently have 12 players contracted for BBL|16. Captain Will Sutherland leads a young batting group, while Jason Behrendorff, Brendan Doggett and the returning Tom Rogers give the pace attack experience.

The two frontline spin options currently confirmed are Michael Archer and Callum Stow. Neither occupied a full primary-roster position at the beginning of the previous season.

What has changed at Melbourne Renegades for BBL|16?

Melbourne Renegades enter the new season with changes to their coaching staff, home ground, spin attack and overseas-player positions.

The most significant confirmed changes are:

What has changed at Melbourne Renegades for BBL|16?
  • Luke Ronchi has replaced Cameron White as head coach.
  • Michael Archer has received his first full BBL contract.
  • Sam Elliott and Callum Stow have re-signed for one season.
  • Tom Rogers is available again after missing all of BBL|15 following shoulder surgery.
  • Adam Zampa has joined Hobart Hurricanes.
  • Tim Seifert has joined Sydney Sixers.
  • Fergus O’Neill has also moved to Sydney Sixers.
  • Andrew Tye has retired.
  • The MCG has replaced Marvel Stadium as the club’s primary home ground.
  • The Renegades will host the first BBL match played outside Australia.

These changes leave the Renegades with six primary-roster positions available. All three permitted overseas positions also remain open.

Who is the Melbourne Renegades captain in BBL|16?

Will Sutherland is the Melbourne Renegades men’s captain for BBL|16.

Sutherland remains central to the team as a captain, middle-order batter and seam-bowling option. One of his defining BBL|15 moments came at the MCG, where he hit two sixes in the final over to complete a Melbourne Derby victory in front of more than 68,000 spectators.

The club has continued to identify him as its men’s captain in its BBL|16 announcements and membership information.

Who is coaching Melbourne Renegades in BBL 2026-27?

Luke Ronchi is the new Melbourne Renegades head coach for BBL|16.

The former Australia and New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter replaces Cameron White, who has moved to Melbourne Stars. Ronchi has worked in several positions with the New Zealand national team and is also the head coach of Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League.

Luke Ronchi is the new Melbourne Renegades head coach for BBL|16.

His appointment brings a different coaching voice to a young batting group containing Josh Brown, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Harry Dixon and Ollie Peake.

Which players have joined or re-signed with Melbourne Renegades?

Victorian leg-spinner Michael Archer is the only player currently listed as a new addition to the primary squad.

Archer made his BBL debut as a replacement player in the Renegades’ final match of BBL|15. He later strengthened his case for a full contract by taking a hat-trick during the Top End T20 tournament in Darwin.

His one-year agreement was the first men’s BBL signing completed after the 2026 contracting embargo ended. The club confirmed the deal in its Michael Archer signing announcement.

Sam Elliott has moved from replacement-player opportunities into the primary squad.

The fast bowler took five wickets from only 8.5 overs during BBL|15. His best performance was a four-wicket haul in the Renegades’ win over eventual champions Perth Scorchers.

Callum Stow has signed for BBL|16 after previously making replacement appearances for the club.

The 24-year-old left-arm wrist-spinner joins Archer in a reshaped spin attack following Adam Zampa’s departure. Stow also spent part of the off-season with San Francisco Unicorns in Major League Cricket.

Tom Rogers remains contracted after adding another season to his Renegades deal.

The fast bowler missed the entire BBL|15 campaign following shoulder surgery. His return is important because he was the club’s leading wicket-taker in BBL|14 and can bowl in both the Powerplay and the closing overs.

Josh Brown signed a two-year extension after leading the Renegades’ BBL|15 batting.

The opener scored 311 runs at a strike rate of 150.24. His season included scores of 84 and 80 in the two Melbourne Derby matches. Brown is now contracted through BBL|17.

Which players have left Melbourne Renegades?

Four players from the BBL|15 group have confirmed departures.

PlayerBBL|16 status
Adam ZampaJoined Hobart Hurricanes
Tim SeifertJoined Sydney Sixers
Fergus O’NeillJoined Sydney Sixers
Andrew TyeRetired

Zampa’s move removes the Renegades’ most experienced white-ball spinner. He represented the club for three seasons before signing a two-year agreement with Hobart Hurricanes.

Seifert’s departure creates a separate problem. The New Zealand batter was the Renegades’ second-highest run-scorer in BBL|15 and also provided a wicketkeeping option. He has signed a one-year contract with Sydney Sixers.

Which Melbourne Renegades players remain uncontracted?

The following BBL|15 players are not part of the confirmed BBL|16 squad as of 16 September 2026.

PlayerRoleCurrent status

Muhammad RizwanOverseas wicketkeeper-batterUncontracted
Nathan LyonOff-spin bowlerUncontracted

Gurinder SandhuFast bowlerUncontracted

An uncontracted player has not been confirmed for BBL|16, but could still agree to a new deal. This status is different from a confirmed departure.

Is Muhammad Rizwan playing for Melbourne Renegades in BBL|16?

Muhammad Rizwan is not currently contracted by Melbourne Renegades for BBL|16.

The Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter scored 187 runs from ten innings in his first Big Bash season. He did not reach fifty and finished with a strike rate of 102.74.

Rizwan’s previous association with the club does not place him in the current squad. A new contract would need to be announced by Melbourne Renegades or Cricket Australia before he can be listed as a BBL|16 player.

Is Nathan Lyon still with Melbourne Renegades?

Nathan Lyon is currently uncontracted for BBL|16.

Lyon completed a three-year Melbourne Renegades contract without playing a match for the club because of his Australian Test commitments. His previous deal has now expired and no new agreement has been announced.

Will Gurinder Sandhu return for BBL|16?

Gurinder Sandhu remains uncontracted despite taking 18 wickets in BBL|15.

Sandhu was the Renegades’ leading wicket-taker and finished level at the top of the regular-season competition list. His absence from the confirmed squad is significant, but it does not rule out a new agreement later in the contracting period.

What are the main gaps in the current Renegades squad?

The Renegades have retained several promising domestic players, but their current 12-player list remains incomplete.

None of the 12 confirmed players is listed as a specialist wicketkeeper. Tim Seifert has joined Sydney Sixers and Muhammad Rizwan remains uncontracted, making wicketkeeping the clearest vacancy in the squad.

The Renegades have not confirmed an overseas player for BBL|16. With a maximum of three overseas players permitted on the primary list, all three positions remain available.

Direct signings have replaced the overseas player draft for BBL|16, allowing the club to negotiate directly with international players.

Three of Melbourne’s five leading BBL|15 run-scorers are currently outside the confirmed squad:

  • Tim Seifert has departed.
  • Muhammad Rizwan is uncontracted.
  • Hassan Khan is uncontracted.

The bowling group also has production to replace. Gurinder Sandhu took 18 wickets but remains uncontracted, while Adam Zampa took six wickets before moving to Hobart. Together, they accounted for 24 wickets last season.

Will Sutherland and Ollie Peake offer middle-order power, but the current list still has room for an experienced finisher. This could be addressed through one of the overseas positions or a later domestic signing.

Why is the Chennai opener historic?

Melbourne Renegades host defending champions Perth Scorchers at MA Chidambaram Stadium on 12 December 2026. It will be the first Big Bash League match staged outside Australia.

The fixture is officially a Renegades home match. It begins at 2:40 PM in Chennai and 8:10 PM AEDT.

The long-distance start also gives the team an unusual early-season break. Melbourne’s next game is against Sydney Sixers at the SCG on 22 December, ten days after the Chennai opener.

Where will Melbourne Renegades play their home matches?

The MCG is the Melbourne Renegades’ new primary home ground for BBL|16. The club has moved away from Marvel Stadium after playing there for 15 seasons.

The two Renegades home matches at the MCG are:

  • Sydney Sixers on 1 January 2027
  • Melbourne Stars on 16 January 2027

Junction Oval hosts the other two Melbourne home games:

  • Hobart Hurricanes on 24 December 2026
  • Brisbane Heat on 10 January 2027

The 24 December game will be the first men’s Big Bash match played in Melbourne on Christmas Eve.

The Renegades will make five appearances in Melbourne overall because their away derby against Melbourne Stars on 4 January is also at the MCG.

When are the Melbourne Derby matches?

Both BBL|16 Melbourne Derby matches will be played at the MCG.

The first is a Melbourne Stars home game on 4 January 2027, starting at 6:05 PM AEDT. The return match is hosted by the Renegades on 16 January at 7:15 PM AEDT.

The Renegades won the first MCG derby of BBL|15, with Will Sutherland completing a final-over chase. More than 68,000 spectators attended that match.

How did Melbourne Renegades perform in BBL|15?

Melbourne Renegades finished seventh in BBL|15 with three wins and seven defeats. They won their opening match but managed only two more victories across the remaining nine games.

The Renegades were still in finals contention at 3–4 before losing their final three matches. It was their third consecutive season without a finals appearance.

Brown’s improvement and Ollie Peake’s development were the main batting positives. Peake’s last-ball six against Perth Scorchers completed one of the team’s most memorable wins of the season.

The full campaign was reviewed in Cricket Australia’s Melbourne Renegades BBL|15 season analysis.

How many Big Bash titles have Melbourne Renegades won?

Melbourne Renegades have won one men’s Big Bash League title.

They defeated Melbourne Stars by 13 runs in the BBL|08 Final in February 2019. The Stars were 0–93 while chasing 146 before collapsing to 7–132, giving the Renegades their first championship.

That final was played at Marvel Stadium, the ground the club has left ahead of its move to the MCG for BBL|16. The result remains the defining achievement in Melbourne Renegades’ history.

What does the current squad tell us about BBL|16?

The Renegades have retained a recognisable domestic core but still have major decisions to make.

Josh Brown gives the batting order established Powerplay hitting, while Jake Fraser-McGurk, Ollie Peake and Harry Dixon provide considerable upside. The return of Tom Rogers strengthens a pace group that already includes Jason Behrendorff, Brendan Doggett, Sam Elliott and Will Sutherland.

The greater uncertainty surrounds wicketkeeping, overseas recruitment and the replacement of last season’s leading wicket-taker. How the final six squad positions are used could determine whether Luke Ronchi’s first season produces an immediate finals challenge.
