Sydney Thunder rebuild around David Warner as Andrew Flintoff takes charge

Sydney Thunder have 10 players confirmed for the Big Bash League 2026-27. Andrew Flintoff is the new head coach, David Warner remains captain after winning the BBL|15 Golden Bat, and Ollie Davies has joined Sydney Sixers. Eight primary roster positions are still available.

Sydney Thunder BBL 2026-27 overview

Sydney Thunder enter BBL|16 after finishing last in the previous season. Their two wins produced only four points, despite Warner leading the competition for runs and Daniel Sams topping the club’s wicket chart.

The Thunder response begins with Flintoff’s appointment, Warner’s one-year extension and a roster that still has more available places than any settled part of the team.

David Warner was not the reason Thunder finished last

David Warner scored 433 runs during the BBL|15 regular season at an average of 86.60 and a strike rate of 154. He missed two matches but still won the Golden Bat as the competition’s leading run-scorer.

Warner’s season included two unbeaten centuries:

• 130 from 65 balls against Hobart Hurricanes
• 110 from 65 balls against Sydney Sixers

He became only the seventh player to score multiple centuries in one BBL season. Warner was also named captain of the official Team of the Tournament for the second consecutive year.

The problem was the drop after him. Matthew Gilkes was Thunder’s second-highest run-scorer with 232, leaving a gap of 201 runs between the team’s top two batters.

Warner’s output gave Thunder a chance in several matches, but the batting group did not produce enough consistent support around him.

The current Cricket Australia squad tracker lists 10 contracted Thunder players.

Andrew Flintoff takes on his first overseas coaching role

Andrew Flintoff replaces Trevor Bayliss as Sydney Thunder men’s head coach. Bayliss left after five seasons in which Thunder reached the finals three times but also finished last twice.

Flintoff previously coached the Northern Superchargers in the Hundred and worked with the England Lions. In August 2026, he stepped down from the Lions role to focus on his new position with Sydney Thunder.

BBL|16 will also mark Flintoff’s return to the Big Bash. He played three matches for Brisbane Heat in BBL|04, scoring 74 runs and taking five wickets.

His first task is not to replace Warner’s production. It is to build a deeper batting order and a bowling attack that does not depend on short-term overseas availability.

Is David Warner still Sydney Thunder captain?

David Warner remains Sydney Thunder captain for BBL|16. His one-year contract extension was announced in January 2026 following his Golden Bat season.

Warner turns 40 in October 2026 and will play his next Big Bash season after that milestone. He has scored more than 400 runs in each of his past two BBL campaigns, compiling 838 runs across that period at an average close to 60.

His role under Flintoff will extend beyond opening the batting. Thunder have several young players, including Sam Konstas, Ryan Hadley and Aidan O’Connor, while eight places on the primary roster remain unfilled.

Matthew Gilkes earned a longer role in Thunder’s top order

Matthew Gilkes has signed a two-year extension running through BBL|17. His 232 runs in BBL|15 were his highest return since the Big Bash changed to its shorter season format.

Gilkes scored at a strike rate of 155.7. His best performance came against Brisbane Heat in Canberra, where he made 76 and shared a 127-run opening partnership with Sam Konstas.

Gilkes gives Flintoff flexibility because he can open the batting or play further down the order. He can also keep wicket, although Sam Billings offers another option behind the stumps.

The bowling rebuild is larger than the squad list suggests

Daniel Sams led Sydney Thunder with 12 wickets in BBL|15 and is contracted through BBL|17. He is also the club’s all-time leading BBL wicket-taker.

Four of Thunder’s next five leading wicket-takers from last season are not currently contracted.

Tanveer Sangha provides a frontline spin option, while Chris Green can bowl off-spin during the powerplay and middle overs. Ryan Hadley adds pace and is signed through BBL|17.

However, the current attack does not include several bowlers who delivered regular overs last season. Pace depth is therefore one of the clearest areas still to be addressed as the roster develops.

Ryan Hadley gives Flintoff a local pace option

Ryan Hadley has signed a two-year extension after making his Big Bash debut in BBL|15. The Blacktown-born fast bowler played four matches and recorded his best figures of 2 for 37 against Melbourne Renegades.

Hadley’s Western Sydney background fits Thunder’s connection with the region. His longer contract also gives the club a young quick who can develop alongside Sams and Sangha rather than relying entirely on short-term international signings.

Sam Billings is the only overseas player currently signed

Sam Billings is the only overseas player on Thunder’s confirmed BBL|16 list. The England wicketkeeper-batter scored 204 runs last season, making him the club’s third-highest run-scorer.

BBL clubs can carry a maximum of three overseas players on their primary roster. Thunder can therefore make two more international signings. That is particularly relevant because Ravichandran Ashwin, Lockie Ferguson, Shadab Khan, Reece Topley and David Willey are all uncontracted.

The BBL|16 overseas draft has been removed. Any new international players will join Thunder through direct agreements with the club.

Is Ravichandran Ashwin playing for Sydney Thunder in BBL|16?

Ravichandran Ashwin is not part of the confirmed Sydney Thunder squad for BBL|16. His current status is uncontracted.

Ashwin signed for BBL|15 and was set to become the first Indian men’s international to play in the Big Bash. A knee injury ruled him out before he could make his Thunder debut.

No new agreement for BBL|16 has been announced. His previous signing and promotional material do not confirm his involvement in the new season.

Pat Cummins and other uncontracted Thunder players

Pat Cummins remains uncontracted after joining Thunder as a supplementary player during BBL|15. His availability would also be affected by Australia’s international schedule, including the five-Test tour of India in January 2027.

An uncontracted player could still agree to a new deal. None of these names belongs on the confirmed BBL|16 squad until Thunder or Cricket Australia announces a signing.

How does Ollie Davies’ departure affect Thunder?

Ollie Davies has left Sydney Thunder and signed a three-year contract with Sydney Sixers. His move reunites him with his brother Joel.

Thunder still have Warner, Bancroft, Gilkes, Billings and Konstas as batting options. However, Davies’ departure removes a middle-order player capable of producing a high scoring rate against spin and pace.

It also adds another storyline to the Sydney Smash. Davies could face Thunder at ENGIE Stadium on 19 December, only three days after his new club begins its season.

Sydney Thunder BBL 2026-27 fixtures

Sydney Thunder play ten regular-season matches between 16 December 2026 and 17 January 2027. Their five designated home games are divided between ENGIE Stadium in Western Sydney and Corroboree Group Oval in Canberra.

Thunder have three ENGIE Stadium games and two Canberra home matches

ENGIE Stadium hosts three Thunder home games:

• Sydney Sixers on 19 December
• Melbourne Renegades on 27 December
• Perth Scorchers on 2 January

The other two home matches are at Corroboree Group Oval, Manuka:

• Adelaide Strikers on 16 December
• Melbourne Stars on 11 January

The split gives Thunder a presence in Western Sydney and Canberra. It also means the team begins and ends its home schedule at Manuka rather than ENGIE Stadium.

Back-to-back Perth matches create an early test

Sydney Thunder face defending champions Perth Scorchers twice in four days.

The first match is at Optus Stadium on 30 December. Thunder then host the return fixture at ENGIE Stadium on 2 January.

Playing the same opponent twice in quick succession gives Flintoff little time to change plans between games. The two results could also shape Thunder’s season before the halfway point of January.

When are the two Sydney Smash matches?

Sydney Thunder host Sydney Sixers at ENGIE Stadium on 19 December 2026. The return Sydney Smash is at the SCG on 15 January 2027.

The first meeting is Thunder’s second match of the season. The return game takes place two days before the regular season ends and could carry finals implications.

Thunder won the BBL|05 championship by defeating the Sixers in the final. The rivalry has since become one of the central fixtures for both Sydney clubs.

What does Thunder still need before BBL|16?

Sydney Thunder have eight primary roster places available. The largest gaps are in pace bowling, middle-order batting and overseas depth.

Only one of Thunder’s five leading BBL|15 wicket-takers is currently contracted. Billings is the sole confirmed overseas player, leaving two international places available. Ollie Davies’ departure also removes an established middle-order option.

The existing core gives Flintoff a starting point. Warner, Gilkes, Billings, Bancroft and Konstas provide batting experience, while Sams, Sangha and Green cover different bowling phases. The remaining signings will decide whether Thunder have enough depth to move away from the bottom of the table.
