Michael Bracewell Moves to Casual NZC Contract for BBL 16 Opportunity
Michael Bracewell has moved from New Zealand Cricket’s central contract list to a casual playing agreement for the 2026 to 2027 season so he can pursue an opportunity in the Australian Big Bash League. The 35 year old all rounder remains available for the BLACKCAPS and has already been selected for New Zealand’s upcoming five match T20I series against India. No BBL 16 team has been officially announced for Bracewell yet.
That final point matters. Bracewell has opened the door to playing in BBL 16, but this is not yet confirmation that he has signed for a particular Big Bash club. His destination should remain listed as unconfirmed until either the player, a BBL club or Cricket Australia announces the deal.

Has Michael Bracewell signed with a BBL team?
Not yet, based on the information officially released.
New Zealand Cricket said Bracewell had changed his contract status to “pursue an opportunity” in the Big Bash League. Its announcement did not identify a club, contract length or availability window. Cricket Australia’s latest BBL 16 squad tracker also does not currently list Bracewell among the confirmed players.
That is different from several of his New Zealand teammates whose Big Bash destinations are already known.
| NZ casual contract player | BBL 16 status |
|---|---|
| Michael Bracewell | Club not announced |
| Finn Allen | Melbourne Stars |
| Mark Chapman | Adelaide Strikers |
| Lockie Ferguson | Sydney Thunder |
| Tim Seifert | Sydney Sixers |
| Adam Milne | No BBL 16 club announced in the current squad tracker |
Finn Allen has moved from Perth Scorchers to Melbourne Stars, Mark Chapman has joined Adelaide Strikers, Lockie Ferguson has returned to Sydney Thunder and Tim Seifert has switched from Melbourne Renegades to Sydney Sixers.
Bracewell becomes the sixth player in New Zealand’s current casual contracting group alongside those five names.
Why Bracewell changed his New Zealand contract
The decision does not mean Bracewell has retired from international cricket or walked away from the BLACKCAPS.
He was originally included on New Zealand’s 20 player central contract list for the period running from August 2026 to July 2027 as a white ball specialist. NZC had already noted in June that discussions around casual playing agreements were taking place.
Bracewell has now taken that route.
In announcing the change, he said the BBL opportunity was difficult to pass up at this stage of his career while stressing that he remains committed to representing New Zealand in white ball cricket.
The structure gives experienced players greater flexibility to take franchise opportunities while remaining part of New Zealand’s international plans.
Bracewell now joins Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, Tim Seifert and Mark Chapman under casual agreements for the 2026 to 2027 season.
Why BBL 16 is easier for an overseas player to enter this season
Bracewell’s timing is particularly interesting because the Big Bash has changed how overseas players are recruited.
The overseas player draft has been removed for BBL 16. Clubs can instead negotiate directly with international players on the open market. Each team may carry up to three overseas players on its primary list, while there is no longer a requirement to sign a minimum number of overseas players.
That creates a much more flexible market for a player such as Bracewell.
He offers two skills within one overseas roster position. He can provide middle order left handed batting while also giving a captain four overs of off spin when conditions or matchups favour it.
The attraction is therefore not based only on reputation. A BBL club considering its final roster places can use Bracewell to cover more than one role without occupying separate squad positions for another specialist batter and spinner.
You can follow how all eight rosters develop on the updated BBL 16 squads tracker.
A BBL deal would be a new chapter for Bracewell
A move to Australia would also give Bracewell something his extensive franchise career has not yet included: a Big Bash appearance.
Available career team records show previous T20 stints with Wellington, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Worcestershire, Seattle Orcas, Multan Sultans, MI New York, Southern Brave, Peshawar Zalmi and other franchise sides, but no previous BBL team.
If a BBL 16 deal is completed and he takes the field, it would therefore mark his Big Bash debut at 35.
His skill set is already well established at international level. Bracewell bowls right arm off spin, bats left handed and has regularly been used by New Zealand as a flexible white ball all rounder rather than in one fixed batting position.
That versatility is likely to be central to his value in the BBL market.
Bracewell is still part of New Zealand’s India plans
There is no immediate break from international cricket.
Bracewell has been selected in Mitchell Santner’s 16 player BLACKCAPS squad for the five match T20I series against India. The series begins at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on 22 October 2026 and runs across 11 days and four cities.
The squad also contains several other New Zealand players with BBL links, including Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne and Tim Seifert.
That gives Bracewell a major international assignment before attention turns toward the Australian domestic season.
When does BBL 16 start?
BBL 16 runs from 12 December 2026 to 26 January 2027, with 44 matches scheduled.
The season starts with Melbourne Renegades facing defending champions Perth Scorchers at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on December 12, the first Big Bash League match played outside Australia. The first match on Australian soil follows on December 15 when Brisbane Heat host Sydney Sixers at the Gabba.
Every fixture, venue and match date is available in the complete BBL 2026 to 2027 schedule.
Nick Kelly takes Bracewell’s central contract
Bracewell’s switch also creates a change inside New Zealand Cricket’s contracted group.
Northern Districts batter and former Wellington Firebirds captain Nick Kelly has received his first NZC central contract, eleven years after making his first class debut.
Kelly debuted for New Zealand in March 2025 and has 15 international appearances, consisting of eight ODIs and seven T20Is. He has also captained New Zealand in two T20 internationals when Tom Latham was unavailable through injury.
So the change works in two directions. Bracewell gains the flexibility required to pursue the BBL, while Kelly moves into New Zealand’s main contracted group.
What happens next with Michael Bracewell and BBL 16?
The next major update is straightforward: which BBL club signs him.
Until that announcement arrives, reports should not attach Bracewell to a particular team. NZC has confirmed the opportunity, not the destination.
With direct overseas recruitment now open and several BBL teams still shaping their 18 player lists, Bracewell becomes one of the more experienced international all rounders available during the final phase of BBL 16 contracting.
BBL2027.com will update Bracewell’s club, contract length and availability as soon as a signing is officially confirmed. Readers can also follow every roster change through our BBL teams hub and latest BBL 16 player signings tracker.
