Riley Kingsell Earns First BBL Contract With Sydney Sixers for BBL 16
The Sydney Sixers have handed Riley Kingsell his first Big Bash contract, signing the 20 year old right handed batter on a one year deal for BBL 16. Kingsell spent last season around the Sixers as a Local Replacement Player, but he is now part of the contracted squad under new head coach Matthew Mott.
The move gives Sydney another young batting option while continuing Kingsell’s rapid rise from NSW pathway cricket to the Big Bash. His first possible BBL appearance, if selected, could come against Brisbane Heat at the Gabba on 15 December 2026, when the Sixers begin their BBL 16 campaign.

The signing was announced by the Sixers on 17 September. The club said Kingsell had impressed coaches and players during his time with the squad last summer and through the preseason.

Why the Sixers have given Kingsell a full contract
Kingsell has not been promoted on potential alone. His pathway record gives the signing more substance than a standard development deal.
In March 2025, Kingsell made 227 from 196 balls for Bankstown against Eastern Suburbs in NSW Premier Cricket, hitting 25 fours and eight sixes. Cricket NSW reported that, at 19 years and 163 days, he became the youngest player to score a first grade double century in the competition.
He had already produced at national age group level. At the 2024 Under 19 National Championships, Kingsell scored 323 runs for NSW Metro at an average of 58.83, with a top score of 161. He finished as the second highest run scorer for the tournament and was named in the Team of the Tournament.
Those numbers help explain his rise from Premier Cricket and Australia Under 19 representation into the NSW professional system and now onto a full Big Bash list.
Kingsell is further along the NSW pathway than some reports suggest
The fresh Sixers announcement describes Kingsell as an NSW Blues rookie, but Cricket NSW’s 2026 to 2027 squad announcement provides a newer status update.
Kingsell first received a NSW rookie contract for the 2025 to 2026 season. In May 2026, Cricket NSW confirmed that he had been elevated to a full state contract for 2026 to 2027.
That matters because his BBL deal is part of a wider progression inside the New South Wales system rather than a standalone opportunity.
Kingsell also represented Australia Under 19 on the 2024 tour of India, which included three 50 over matches and two four day games. He was one of four NSW players selected for the tour.
What Riley Kingsell adds to the Sydney Sixers squad
Kingsell gives the Sixers another specialist right handed batting option and extra depth.
Sydney already have established batting names such as Steve Smith, Josh Philippe, Tim Seifert, Jordan Silk and Ollie Davies on their current list. Kingsell is therefore not arriving with a guaranteed place in the starting side. His challenge will be to push for selection and show that his Premier Cricket scoring can translate to T20 cricket.
The club is also going through a noticeable transition. Moises Henriques has retired from Australian domestic cricket, while the Sixers have added Ollie Davies, Fergus O’Neill and New Zealand wicketkeeper batter Tim Seifert during the offseason. Kingsell becomes another part of that refreshed group.

His BBL 15 experience could help
Kingsell did not play a Big Bash match last season, but he was already inside the Sixers setup as a Local Replacement Player. Cricket Australia’s BBL 15 squad tracker listed him among Sydney’s replacement players.
That gave him access to a professional T20 environment before receiving his first full contract. Kingsell said he learned professional habits from his time with the group and highlighted the experience of watching Steve Smith and Babar Azam prepare.
For a young batter, that exposure matters. The jump from Premier Cricket to the Big Bash also involves tactical roles, match preparation, larger crowds and the pressure of limited T20 opportunities.
Kingsell now enters BBL 16 with some familiarity rather than joining the Sixers environment cold.
When could Riley Kingsell make his Big Bash debut?
The Sixers begin their BBL 16 season against Brisbane Heat at the Gabba on 15 December 2026. If Kingsell is selected in the XI, that would be his first opportunity to make a Big Bash debut.
Sydney then face Sydney Thunder at ENGIE Stadium on 19 December before their first home match at the SCG against Melbourne Renegades on 22 December.

Selection will depend on form, availability and the balance Matthew Mott wants. The contract guarantees Kingsell a squad place, not an automatic debut.
A strong sporting background
Kingsell also comes from an elite sporting family. His mother, Sarah Ryan OAM, represented Australia in swimming at the Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
Australian Olympic Committee records show that Ryan collected three Olympic relay medals across those Games, including gold in the women’s 4 x 100 metre freestyle relay in Athens. She also earned silver medals at Atlanta and Sydney.
What happens next for Riley Kingsell
The immediate target is to turn a first BBL contract into a first Big Bash appearance.
His Premier Cricket record shows he can make substantial scores. His Australia Under 19 experience shows he has been tested beyond club cricket. His full NSW contract shows he has continued moving through the state system.
Now the challenge is T20 opportunity.
For the Sixers, the signing adds a young local batter without forcing him straight into a major role. For Kingsell, BBL 16 is the chance to move from being around the squad to competing for a place on the field.
