Shai Hope Returns as Nic Maddinson Re Signs for BBL|16

Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Thunder have both strengthened their batting groups ahead of BBL|16, with Shai Hope returning to Hobart for the full season and Nic Maddinson re signing with Sydney Thunder. The two moves change the shape of both squads just weeks before the Big Bash League 2026 27 campaign begins.

Hope is back as Hobart’s first confirmed overseas player for BBL|16, while Maddinson returns to Thunder after a five match campaign last season. Both players offer something their teams were missing as they continue to build their primary squads.

The latest additions are now reflected on the BBL player signings page.

Shai Hope returns to Hobart Hurricanes

Shai Hope has returned to the Hobart Hurricanes after agreeing to play the full BBL|16 campaign.

The West Indies ODI and T20I captain previously spent five matches with Hobart during the club’s championship winning 2024 25 season. His first stint ended early because of overseas commitments, but this time the Hurricanes have secured him for the entire tournament.

Why Hope is important for Hobart

Hope brings a much more established international batting profile than the Hurricanes had in the earlier version of their BBL|16 squad.

The 32 year old has scored more than 1,700 T20 international runs at a strike rate above 136 and remains the West Indies captain in both white ball formats. His experience also gives Hobart another player accustomed to leading and batting under pressure.

His arrival could allow Hobart to build a more defined top order around players such as Ben McDermott, Jake Weatherald and Nikhil Chaudhary, while Mitch Owen and Tim David retain their value as aggressive options through the middle and later stages of an innings.

Hope also gives the Hurricanes a second established wicketkeeper batter alongside McDermott.

That makes his signing more useful than a simple overseas batting addition.

The latest Hobart Hurricanes squad now includes Hope alongside Adam Zampa, Nathan Ellis, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Mitch Owen and Beau Webster.

Maddinson returns to Sydney Thunder

Sydney Thunder have also added experience to their batting order by re signing Nic Maddinson for BBL|16.

The left handed batter made his return to Big Bash cricket with Thunder last season, playing five matches. His most memorable contribution came against Melbourne Renegades when he scored 30 from 17 balls in a match winning partnership with Chris Green.

Maddinson is now expected to be available for the full BBL|16 season.

His return is especially relevant because Thunder lost Ollie Davies to Sydney Sixers during the player movement period. That left the team needing another experienced middle order batter, rather than simply adding another specialist opener.

Maddinson fills that space naturally.

The latest Sydney Thunder squad now contains 12 confirmed players, with David Warner continuing as captain and Andrew Flintoff beginning his first season as head coach.

Two batting moves, two different squad needs

Although both players are batters, their recruitment solves different problems.

Hope gives Hobart greater stability at the top of the innings, while Maddinson provides Thunder with another middle order option.

That distinction is important when looking at the wider BBL|16 player movement.

Thunder now have greater batting depth

Maddinson’s return also changes the recruitment picture at Sydney Thunder.

The club now has 12 confirmed players, including two overseas players in Sam Billings and Lockie Ferguson. One further overseas position remains available, while six primary roster places are still open.

Thunder therefore do not need to find another batter simply to cover Maddinson’s role. Their remaining recruitment can focus on overall squad balance, including bowling depth and another international option if required.

That is where the BBL 2026 27 squads page becomes useful as the league’s remaining player movement continues.

Lockie Ferguson adds another Thunder boost

Maddinson’s return follows Sydney Thunder’s earlier decision to bring back New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson.

Ferguson has committed to the full BBL|16 season, including finals, after missing the entire previous campaign with a calf injury.

He played six matches for Thunder in BBL|14 and took eight wickets at an average of 21.50.

Thunder therefore enter BBL|16 with both their batting and overseas depth improving during the same recruitment period.

That gives Flintoff a clearer starting point for his first season in charge.

Both clubs still have room to strengthen

Neither squad is complete.

Hobart have seven primary roster positions remaining and two overseas positions available. Sydney Thunder have six primary roster places left and one overseas position available.

The numbers also show why these latest signings matter.

Both clubs still have room to recruit, but the biggest uncertainty has shifted from basic squad construction towards finding the right final pieces.

What do Shai Hope and Nic Maddinson add to BBL|16?

The two moves give Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Thunder more defined batting groups before the season begins.

Shai Hope: Adds international experience, top order stability and wicketkeeping cover while remaining available for the full campaign.

Nic Maddinson: Adds left handed middle order power, domestic experience and another player capable of changing the tempo of an innings.

Hope also knows the Hobart environment from his previous spell, while Maddinson is already familiar with Thunder’s squad and has built a strong connection with several teammates.

For Hobart, the next recruitment decisions will now revolve around completing an overseas group around Hope and strengthening the remaining seven roster positions.

For Thunder, Maddinson’s return and Ferguson’s availability give Flintoff a stronger core from which to build the rest of the squad.

When does BBL|16 begin?

BBL|16 starts on 12 December 2026, when Melbourne Renegades host defending champions Perth Scorchers at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Hobart Hurricanes begin their campaign on 17 December against Brisbane Heat at Ninja Stadium, while Sydney Thunder open their season on 16 December against Adelaide Strikers at Corroboree Group Oval in Manuka.

The full fixtures can be followed on the BBL 2026 27 schedule.

The latest player movement means both Hobart and Sydney Thunder enter the final stages of squad building with stronger batting depth than they had earlier in the off season. Hope’s full season availability gives the Hurricanes an experienced international presence at the top, while Maddinson’s return restores an experienced left handed option to a Thunder middle order that lost Davies.

With both clubs still holding open roster positions, further BBL|16 signings are likely to shape their final squads before the season starts.
